What is the Magic of Bone Broth?
Made from animal bones and connective tissues, bone broth is one of the few foods that are soothing, highly nutritious and inexpensive to prepare. Bone broth is rich in proteins like gelatin and contains calcium, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, iron and copper – nutrients necessary for for your pup to live a healthy life. Bone broth is nutrient-dense and easy to digest. It's also very flavorful and has the ability to expedite healing. That's just one of the many benefits of bone broth.
Most bone broth is made, as we said earlier, bones, but also from marrow, skin and feet, tendons and ligaments. When acid and heat is added to a boiling pot of this mix, and allowed to simmer for a day or so, the result is magic. The acid helps the bones and ligaments to release truly healing compounds like collagen, proline, glycine and glutamine. These amino acids are highly beneficial and can transform your dog's health.
What is an amino acid? Amino acids are considered to be the building blocks of polypeptides and proteins. Basically a cornerstone of vital health.

What Are the Benefits of Bone Broth?
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of amino acids to life itself. If you take proline, just on its own you'll see that it is a "complete protein" food. The need for proline increases as your dog ages or becomes immune compromised. If your pet has skin issues, heals slowly, experiences joint pain or gastrointestinal problems, or heart disease, then proline is a must. This is just one of benefits of bone broth. Some of the others include management of:
- arthritis
- leaky gut
- overweight
- immune system
- malnourishment
- liver detoxification
- mineral assimilation
- food and environmental allergies
What Conditions is Bone Broth Good For?
Kennel Cough and Pneumonia
While we learned earlier than kennel cough is a self-limiting condition, bone broth can help shorten the duration. This gelatinous broth is a heavy hitter when it comes to treating cold and flu symptoms – the tell tale signs of kennel cough. According to a recent study (source) by the American College of Physicians, bone broth can help eliminate symptoms of a common cold by opening the respiratory pathways, clearing mucus and providing easily digestible nutrition.
Did you know? One of the benefits of bone broth is that it contains cysteine. Cysteine is an amino acid that performs the same function as the drug acetylcysteine does for bronchitis. It basically helps halt bronchitis, asthma and other problematic breathing issues.
Inflammation
When your dog has inflammation it is his/her response to a foreign organism, or a compromised immune system. When your pup has a 'sensitive stomach' it's an indication of something more serious that typically includes gut inflammation. One of the benefits of bone broth is its ability to help reduce general inflammation. This is due to the presence of amino acids like cystine, histidine, glycine and L-glutamine which has been shown to specifically combat gut inflammation.
Weight Loss
Research has shown that dogs that are obese, or fed a commercial food have a high amount of Firmicutes in their body (source). Firmicutes is a type of bacteria that extracts calories from food in the digestive tract. Interestingly, bone broth contains L-glutamine. L-glutamine is an amino acid that can help reduce Firmicutes, and thereby balance your dog's gut microbes – bringing about weight loss and lessen bloat. In essence, eating bone broth can help your dog reduce calorie intake in his/her body, creating a healthier gut and potential weight loss.
Strong Bones and Everything Else!
Finally, it just stands to reason given the nature of ingredients that the benefits of bone broth includes:
- stronger bones, teeth and nails
- benefits to the immune system
- enhanced muscles
- insulin regulation
- cell protection
- pain relief
Basically, one of the benefits of bone broth is anti-aging. It helps your dog create protections against free radicals and slow down cellular decline.
How to Make Bone Broth
The procedure for making your dog homemade bone broth from scratch is easy and straightforward. Here's our video showing you exactly how to replicate our delicious and nutritious bone broth and the recipe is below.
Bone Broth
Nutritious, delicious and easy to make bone broth that boosts your pet's immunity, heals leaky gut, and promotes healthy bones.
- 1/2 lbs Beef and Lamb Bones organic grass-fed sourced
- 6-10 ea Chicken Feet organic free-range sourced
- 1/2 cup Raw Apple Cider Vinegar organic with the mother
- 2-4 cup Water Filtered
-
Place bones and chicken feed in a crockpot. Cover bones and feet with filtered water. Add apple cider vinegar. Set crock pot on high setting for 24 hours. Check occasionally, gently stirring to break down bones. May need to add small amounts of water, but not much.
-
When 24 hours is up, turn off crockpot. Using a large slotted spoon, remove bones and allow to cool for a 2-5 minutes. Do not feed the bones to your dog as they are brittle. Pour broth through a strainer, to remove remaining bone bits, into a temperature proof glass container. Allow to cool for another 5 minutes. After time is up, pour into glass canning jar(s). Set in Refrigerator for 2 hours.
-
After 2 hours, take jars out of refrigerator and remove the hard layer of fat that has congealed at the top of the broth. Broth should be gelatinous at this point. You can place back in the refrigerator and use within 3-4 days, or in freezer for up to a year.
